Discovering Melbourne — Australia’s Young, Creative Soul
A travel story, not a brochure
Flying from Dublin to Melbourne via Zurich and Singapore took us around 26 hours — long, yes, but absolutely worth it.
From the very first moment, Melbourne greeted us with youthful colors, creative energy, and a feeling that the whole city lives outdoors. Cafés spill onto sidewalks, students fill the parks, street musicians perform on corners — it honestly feels like an eternal student city, powered by young, energetic people.
We arrived in April, and the weather was perfect — sunny days reaching up to 28°C, ideal for exploring on foot and by tram.
Melbourne is one of those cities where culture and nature blend beautifully:
- Huge green parks
- World-class museums and galleries
- Vibrant street art
- Endless coffee spots (Melbourne takes coffee very seriously)
A nice surprise: on Sundays, public trams in central areas are free for everyone, which makes sightseeing even easier.

What Makes Melbourne Special
🌿 Massive green spaces like Royal Botanic Gardens
🎨 Street art districts (Hosier Lane is a must)
☕ One of the best coffee cultures in the world
🚋 Easy public transport — trams everywhere
🌊 Ocean escapes just a short drive away
Life here happens outside. People picnic in parks, jog along the river, meet friends for brunch, and watch sunsets by the bay.

The Highlight of the Trip: Great Ocean Road & the Twelve Apostles
Wildlife — Not in Zoos, but in Real Life
One of the most surreal parts?
- 🐨 Koalas chilling in eucalyptus trees
- 🦘 Kangaroos hopping across open fields
- 🦜 Cockatoos flying freely through parks and countryside
No cages. No zoo tickets. Just real Australian wildlife living its normal life around you.
That alone makes travelling around Melbourne and Victoria incredibly special.

Travel Tips & Tricks (from my experience)
✈️ Getting There
- Breaking the journey via hubs like Zurich & Singapore makes long flights more manageable.
- Choose aisle seats for such long routes — trust me.
🚗 Explore Beyond the City
- Rent a car for Great Ocean Road — tours are fine, but driving gives freedom to stop anywhere.
- Start early to avoid crowds at popular viewpoints.
🏨 Where to Stay
- CBD (city center) for culture & transport
- St Kilda for beach vibes
- Southbank for river views and dining
📱 Practical Tips
Comfortable walking shoes — Melbourne is made for exploring on foot.
Get an eSIM or local SIM — coverage is excellent.
Sunscreen is a must (Australian sun is strong even in April).
🍽 Food Scene
- Don’t miss brunch culture.
- Try Asian fusion — Melbourne has incredible Vietnamese, Thai, and modern Asian kitchens.
- Coffee: flat white or long black are local favorites.
Final Thoughts
Melbourne isn’t just a city — it’s a lifestyle.
It feels young. It feels creative. It feels alive.
From colorful streets to dramatic ocean cliffs, from wild kangaroos to sunset views over the Twelve Apostles — this trip left a deep impression on me.
If you’re dreaming about Australia, start with Melbourne. It gives you culture, nature, wildlife, and unforgettable road trips — all in one place.
