Travel Guide to Singapore & Malaysia from Ireland

A real journey from Dublin through Asia – routes, islands, cities & travel wisdom

Traveling through Singapore and Malaysia was never just a checklist trip for me.
It was a journey of contrasts – from the calm efficiency of Singapore to the raw energy of Kuala Lumpur, from tropical islands to limestone caves, and finally to a tiny Thai island that quietly steals your heart.

This guide is based on my real route from Dublin, real transport choices, real hotels, and real lessons learned along the way. If you’re planning a smooth, inspiring and stress-free trip through Southeast Asia, this is for you.

From Dublin to Asia – the Journey Begins

I started my journey in Dublin, flying first to Amsterdam, then onward to Kuala Lumpur.
Breaking the long-haul journey this way made the trip far more comfortable and manageable.

Long flights to Asia can feel overwhelming, but with the right connections, they become part of the adventure rather than something to survive.

Tip:
If you can, choose routes with one short European stop instead of jumping straight into a 13–14 hour flight.

Kuala Lumpur – A City of Scale, Culture & Surprise

Kuala Lumpur doesn’t try to impress quietly.
It’s loud, vertical, colourful and intense – but that’s exactly why it works.

Batu Caves – A Moment You Don’t Forget

One of the most powerful impressions of the entire trip was Batu Caves.

The massive golden statue, the rainbow staircase, the heat, the climb – everything about it feels dramatic. As you walk up the steps, surrounded by monkeys and humidity, the city slowly disappears behind you.

This is not just a tourist stop. It feels spiritual, raw and alive.

Travel tip:
Go early in the morning. Bring water. Dress modestly.

Where You Can Go from Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is one of the best travel hubs in Southeast Asia. From here, you can easily reach:

This flexibility makes KL perfect as a starting point or midpoint of a longer Asian journey.

From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore – A Different World

From Kuala Lumpur, we flew to Singapore for a few days – and the contrast was immediate.

Singapore feels like precision engineered into a city.

Clean, calm, efficient, green – everything works exactly as expected.

Back to Malaysia – Flight to Langkawi

After Singapore, we flew back into Langkawi, a completely different pace of life.

Langkawi is relaxed, green, tropical – the perfect reset after big cities.

Langkawi to Koh Lipe – A Journey to Stillness

From Langkawi, we took a boat to Koh Lipe, Thailand.

This island deserves a place on every traveler’s list.

White sand, clear water, slow mornings, long sunsets – Koh Lipe doesn’t shout for attention. It simply exists beautifully.

We stayed here for a full week, and it was one of the most balanced parts of the trip.

Travel tip:
Bring cash. Life here is simple, and that’s the point.

After Koh Lipe – Back to Langkawi

After a week in Koh Lipe, we returned to Langkawi to finish the journey slowly – massages, sunsets, local food, and no rushing.

This rhythm – city → island → small island → island again – works incredibly well.

Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur

If you want comfort and location, these are excellent options:

Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara – luxury, calm

Hilton Kuala Lumpur – central, reliable

Star Suites KLCC – 5 min walk to Petronas Towers

Where to Stay in Koh Lipe – Anda Lipe Resort

If there is one place in Koh Lipe that truly defines island perfection, it’s Anda Lipe Resort — a beachfront hotel that offers privacy, exceptional service, outstanding food and unforgettable sunsets.

This is not a hotel you choose only for sleeping. Anda Lipe Resort is a place where days slow down naturally, meals become part of the experience, and evenings are spent watching the sun disappear into the sea from your own stretch of beach.

The resort is located directly on a private white-sand beach, slightly away from the busy walking street, which makes it peaceful and exclusive, yet still easy to reach everything by a short walk or boat ride. The atmosphere feels calm, elegant and genuinely relaxed — luxury without stiffness.

Why Anda Lipe Resort stands out

This is the kind of place where you wake up to the sound of the waves, walk barefoot all day, and end the evening with a drink in hand as the sky turns gold, pink and deep orange.

If you’re visiting Koh Lipe and want more than just a hotel room, Anda Lipe Resort is where the island truly shows its best side.

Where to Stay in Langkawi – Lavanya Sea View Apartments with Resort Access

Langkawi is the kind of island that invites you to slow down — not by doing nothing, but by choosing experiences that feel natural, spacious and unhurried. And staying in the right place makes all the difference.

Lavanya Sea View Apartments with Resort Access turned out to be the perfect base for exploring the island while still enjoying peace, space and incredible views.

These apartments offer the comfort of your own space combined with resort-level access, which is ideal if you want flexibility without sacrificing atmosphere. Waking up to sea views, having room to breathe, and returning after long days of exploring felt effortless and relaxing.

Why Lavanya Sea View Apartments are a great choice

This is the kind of place where you feel at home, not like a temporary guest.

What to See & Do in Langkawi – Experiences Worth Every Minute

Langkawi is not about rushing from attraction to attraction. It’s about choosing a few unforgettable experiences — and some of them truly stay with you.

Island Hopping & Mangrove Boat Tour – Langkawi’s Wild Side

Without question, the highlight of the entire Langkawi stay was the boat trip through the island’s wild mangrove landscapes — often called Langkawi’s “Amazon”.

Gliding slowly through narrow waterways surrounded by dense greenery feels untouched and powerful. You’re far from roads, buildings and noise — just water, trees and wildlife.

The trip continued to remote white-sand beaches, where the water is clear, calm and almost unreal in colour. These are the moments that remind you why islands exist.

This is not optional. This is a must.

Langkawi Sky Bridge & Cable Car – Views You Don’t Forget

Another unforgettable experience is the Langkawi Cable Car and Sky Bridge.

The ride itself is dramatic, lifting you above rainforest-covered mountains, with the sea stretching endlessly in the distance. Reaching the Sky Bridge feels surreal — suspended between peaks, with views that stop conversations mid-sentence.

Go on a clear day if possible. The contrast between jungle green and deep blue sea is stunning.

Final Thoughts

This journey through Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand wasn’t about rushing through highlights.
It was about flow – knowing when to move, when to stop, and when to stay longer than planned.

If Singapore teaches you precision and rhythm, Malaysia teaches contrast and energy, and Koh Lipe reminds you why you travel in the first place.
